So,
We headed up to Kernville again but this time with the Grover grandparents and in a cabin for the weekend. It was a nice place and the town was insanely packed for the weekend. People were everywhere; passed out on the shore, covering the parks, floating in tubes, kayaks, rafts etc. We showed up the first night and the grandparents gave the kids some outdoor gifts.
New fishing rods! A got spiderman and Z got princesses. They promptly went to work tangling them up on everything and everyone and papa promptly got to work untangling them.
The next day I woke up early and grandpa and I went fishing.
That is the ONLY fish I saw anyone catch the whole weekend. Grandpa caught one on the last day but it was smallish so he tried to put it back.
After we got home from fishing we decided to head out to a local ghost town. The whole Kern valley used to be a big spot for mining so there is a lot of wild west type history out there. Some guy collected a bunch of the old buildings in one spot and posted the history about them. There was some pretty cool stuff.

Ringing the dinner bell |
Attempting a family picture |
There's a me in there. |
The facilities left something to be desired. |
Telling funny stories. |
Looking for the reported ghosts in the old jail. |
Somebody or something! locked them in there! |
Sorta managed to get a nice family shot. |
After that we came home and the kids took naps while the grandparents went and checked out an art fair and some antique shops. When they got home we worked up some water balloons and had a little water fight.
Aiden had a way of popping it before it left his hand. |
No one was spared. |
BOMBS AWAY!!! |
Since Z's birthday is coming up we had an early "fake" birthday (her words). There were presents and cupcakes.
Jake and the pirates!!! |
Sam kept getting in the way. |
What THE!? |
BWAAAH!!!! |
Dora farm set. |
Also a hat and shirt. Lucky kids! |
We set up the cupcakes and candles and A beat Z to the punch blowing out all but one! Z wasn't happy. |
She blew out the last one and we ate cupcakes and Ice Cream. |
The next day we woke up and set out to the trout hatchery upstream. They weren't working at full capacity but there were still a lot of trout in there.
You could buy pellets and feed them to fatten them up.
A handful of feed got them kind of riled up. |
We thought we were doing pretty good. |
Then the department of fish and game guy showed up.
The pond went crazy. |
From there we went to a local Audubon trail to bird watch.
We didn't make it far before A had a complete meltdown and started one of his half hour crying fits. So we left. After naps we took the kids down to the river to try their hands at fishing (not really). They had been practicing all weekend.
Z gave it a shot from grandpas' favorite spot with moms help.
Nothing biting. |
We came home for more delicious BBQ and fun.
The next morning grandpa and I woke up to try our hand at fishing again. This is when he caught his put backer but I got nothing but snags and lost hooks. We packed up the vehicles and headed home. It was a really nice trip full of fun outdoors stuff and we've hardly scratched at the surface of what the area has to offer.
Coming up we have Cherry picking and Z's birthday so stay tuned for more adventures.

What a fun trip. The weather looks like it was perfect. I'm jealous and ready for another cross-country trip! Your kidlets are growing and changing.
Holy cow you packed a lot of stuff into one weekend! Looks like lots of fun. I like the pic of T's dad in the outhouse.
Nice job catching the fish, too!
That looks like a really fun weekend. In the shots it doesn't look that crowded there.
For a "cabin" that looks really sweet.
